When to take out cover
Your travel insurance policy must be issued before you embark on your journey. The start and end date of your cover must correspond with the dates of your departure from - and arrival back in South Africa.
Cover for kids
Complimentary cover for dependent children, who travel with you, is included in the following AA Travel Insurance cover options:
- AAIM Traveller
- Budget Traveller
- Luxury Traveller
Your children will share the cover that is available for you, their parent(s).
Premiums for family cover provides for both you and your spouse.
Travelling to North America and 69 years of age or younger? Then there’s only one choice,which is the Luxury Traveller cover option.
Medical conditions covered
Cover for pre-existing medical conditions is available with the following AA Travel Insurance cover options: AAIM Traveller, Budget Traveller, Luxury Traveller and Business Traveller - all subject to 48 hours minimum hospitalisation. Each cover option has different levels of cover, so be sure to select an option that provides adequately for your particular travel needs.
Medical conditions not covered
Any vascular,cardiovascular and cerebrovascular conditions for anyone over the age of 69 years are automatically excluded - even if you do buy cover for pre-existing medical conditions.

Indispensable cover for unexpected illnesses or injuries, including out-patient treatment, hospitalisation, evacuation, repatriation & and return of mortal remains.
A must-have cash benefit for death or permanent disablement as a result of an accident.
Support from the trusted Europ Assistance in pre-determined emergencies that for example require cash advances, legal & household assistance.
The following cover is included in AA Travel Insurance options:
- Cancellation of your insured journey before it starts
Irrecoverable pre-paid expenses if you are forced to cancel your travels due an adventure sports incident.
- Cutting your journey short after it has started
Irrecoverable pre-paid expenses if you are forced to return home early due to an adventure sports incident.
- Cancellation due to your visa application being denied
Only applicable to the Luxury Traveller and Business Traveller cover options & subject to the condition that you meet all visa requirements.
- Cancellation for any reason
Only applicable to the Luxury Traveller and Business Traveller cover options. You must buy your policy within at least 24 hours of paying for your travel ticket & your trip must not be cancelled within 48 hours of your planned time of departure. Irrecoverable pre-paid expenses is only covered if you cannot travel at all - due to reasons that were unforeseen at that time you bought your policy.
- Postponement of your journey
Irrecoverable pre-paid expenses if you cannot travel at all due to an adventure sports incident.
- Travel supplier insolvency cover
Irrecoverable pre-paid expenses if you are unable to travel because your airline or travel supplier has been liquidated.
- Travel delay
Critical expenses when your planned departure is delayed because of issues such as strikes, bad weather or mechanical breakdowns.
- Security travel delay
Critical expenses when your planned departure is delayed because of unforeseen circumstances such as a threat of a terrorist incident or a security alert. This is only available on our Luxury and Business Traveller cover options.
- Missing connecting flights
Expenses for sticking to your original itinerary when you miss a connecting flight because an incoming flight was delayed.
- Natural disaster cover
Additional or alternative accommodation expenses when you have already paid for accommodation but it gets destroyed by a natural disaster.
Cover for the theft of, loss or damage to your personal belongings, cash and travel documents. We also pay for essential items if your baggage is delayed.
We cover the costs when you become legally liable for accidental harm to a person or their property.
A daily cash benefit for every full day that you are held under duress because the public transport in which you are travelling is hijacked.
A reasonable amount of cover for fees and expenses as a direct result of your kidnapping or wrongful detention. This is only available with our Luxury and Business Traveller cover options.
We will refund the excess amount you paid on a rental car insurance claim that arose during your insured journey. This is only available with our Luxury and Business Traveller cover options.
For an additional premium we will waive all excess amounts, except for the 48-hour hospitalisation excess that applies under pre-existing medical conditions cover.
